After swimming for 11 years, Jim Albertson ended up one of the two captains for DVC’s men’s swimming team.
Last year, he was named an All-American and voted most inspirational by his teammates.
Prior to DVC, Albertson swam at College Park High School for four years, three of which he spent on the varsity team.
At College Park, he won MVP his freshman year on the junior varsity team, and senior year he was awarded the Coaches Award.
In his fifth semester at DVC, Albertson co-captains with teammate Taylor Herman.
Herman, met Albertson last year when they were first year of swimming for DVC, said of him, “He cares a lot about the sport and he's committed to getting better by training hard.”
Head coach Rick Millington echoed Herman’s praise, “[He’s] at every practice. He works extremely hard so the qualities we’re looking for as a leader he showed us.”
Coach Millington met Albertson the summer before his senior year in hopes he would swim for DVC. He’s been impressed the past two years with his improvement from a sprint swimmer to swimming long distances.
“He has a great work ethic,” Millington said. “We talked him into swimming the distant events and he excelled at them.”
His mother, a former swimmer herself, encouraged Albertson to follow in her footsteps.
He swam for the recreational swim team, the Pleasant Hill Dolphins during the summer, then at College Park and most recently DVC and the USA team, Walnut Creek Aqua Bears.
“[It’s] one of the most fun swim teams I’ve been on,” Albertson said of his DVC experience, adding that he and his teammates “share the same kind of work ethic.”
Albertson will continue to swim while attending Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo. on an academic scholarship.
