Media plan directs reporters away from sources

DVC public information official says district 'not in business of withholding information'

A new proposal designed to improve the media's relationship with the college district is already causing confusion among top officials and delaying journalists' access to information. The proposal calls for district employees to direct media inquiries to a college president, public information officer or designated spokesperson if asked a question that requires an "official statement" on behalf of the district, said Timothy Leong, the district's new director of communications and community relations.

DVC transfer students will be more likely to graduate with an associate of arts degree under a proposed change in General Education requirements approved by the faculty. The new GE pattern for the A.A. degree - written by Merv Maruyama of the counseling department - requires a minimum of 21 units, down from the current 26.

Students elect new ASDVC president

Bundit Kertbundit edged out Nathan Pastor by an 84-vote margin in the race for president of the Associated Students of DVC in a record-breaking turnout by voters. A total of 1,201 students voted, more than double last year's turnout. Kertbundit drew 473 votes to Pastor's 389 votes, followed by Raymundo Veloz with 151 votes and Como Shin with 133 votes.

Honor society members help disabled woman

Nine members of DVC's honor society traded their books for paint brushes Saturday to help renovate the Berkeley home of an elderly disabled woman as part of National Rebuilding Day. The Alpha Gamma Sigma students joined forces with 19 other volunteers to paint the exterior of Berdie Percoats' home, where she has lived for the past 36 years.
